Tuesday January 26, 2010

My only day off this week and I get woken up from a text sent from my Dad, letting me know that he and Mom were going to be at my place in about an hour. Now, had I known that my parents were, indeed, coming to visit, I would have picked up the place a bit. However, it is quite the unfortunate tradition in my family to fail to let me know of anything that is going on. I quickly jump out of bed, shower, and start cleaning up things that may upset the folks if they were to stumble upon it.

Once I'm done with everything, I shoot a call over to my Dad to see where they are at. It's then that I find out that my Dad had meant to say that they were leaving home in an hour. So they had literally just gotten on the road when I called him. Son of a bitch! But, at least the place was clean and I now had just about three hours to relax and enjoy my day off. I chill out in my room for a bit and decide to peep out the first episode of the first season of 24 that Hart let me borrow some time back. I've been wanting to sit down and watch it ever since I started really getting into the 8th season.

Of course, one episode turns into four episodes because I can't help but get insanely wrapped up in the day in the life of Jack Bauer. The show is unbelievable. So many fuckin' twists, double-crosses, and intense shoot-outs, and every episode is left with the biggest fuckin' cliffhanger. And now I realize how these shows can rope a motherfucker in easier than luring a child with candy.

After about four hours of watching Jack Bauer kick ass, my parents finally arrive. Turns out they had to stop at some country club to pick up a gift certificate for our family friend, Jim. It's his birthday this week, so my parents decided to make a trip up and go out to lunch with him and give him his gift. They ask me if I'd be interested in going with, an invitation that I gladly accept because I'm hungrier than a bastard after watching so much ass-kicking.

We all bomb over to Steven's Restaurant and grab lunch with Jim. We eat and sit around bullshitting for the next three hours or so. It's a pretty good time. We finally cruise out and head back to my place so my Dad can hang up some painting in the kitchen that Tool got for Christmas.

My Dad does his work in the kitchen while my Mom and I sit in my room so she can peruse my DVD collection and see if there's anything she want's to take home with her. I make some suggestions of movies she and my old man might enjoy and end up sending them home with Little Miss Sunshine, The U.S. VS. John Lennon, and American Gangster. My parents never really got into movies as much as they do now, and I think it has something to do with my pursuing a film making career. They always knew I loved to watch movies, but it wasn't until maybe a year ago when they stopped and realized, "oh this motherfucker actually knows what he's talking about." Since then, they have been asking my advice on films left and right. It's good times.

My parents bomb out of there around 7:30 or so and I sit down to watch a few more episodes of 24. I only get through about ten minutes of the 5th episode when Hart and Justin show up for our planned movie night. Mary shows up not too long after and we opt to watch The Usual Suspects, a movie neither Justin or Mary have seen. We watch the movie and Justin, Mary, and myself indulge in a power hour while we watch. Needless to say, by the end of the movie, we were pretty lit.

V and shown up about halfway through the movie, so him and Hart cruise right after it ends. The rest of us decide to try and finish our 30-case tonight, and end up channel surfing for the next half hour or so. We settle on Mrs. Doubtfire for a bit, until Justin and I get this huge urge to throw on Patch Adams. Mary had never seen it before and kind of opts against it, stating that it's gonna make her cry hysterically. I convince her to watch the movie by making a bet with her: if she cries, I'll give her $5. If she cries hysterically, I'll give her $10. She agrees and I immediately regret my wager, as I know for a fact this movie is gonna make her bawl.

Make no mistake, she's crying up a storm withing the first twenty minutes of the movie. By the end of it, her eyes are so red and puffy that she looks like she had an allergic reaction to something. I shell out the $10 that I promised her and send her and Justin on their way home. I cruise into the bathroom for my nightly routine, and then head into my bedroom to crash to more episodes of 24.
